BUILDing the Future
Bernardo Castilho, Chief Technology
Officer
Last month I traveled back to an area I've enjoyed for
many years, San Francisco. This time it wasn't for the
weather or the food, but for Microsoft's BUILD
conference. While our company was an exhibitor, I had
the opportunity to attend the keynotes, sessions, and
hands-on labs (and to score a super-cool Surface Pro).

I was happy to learn that Microsoft will be adding
support for Bootstrap, a great framework for creating
responsive design web interfaces. Microsoft's Scott
Hanselman described the new ASP.NET project templates in
Visual Studio 2013; they now include Bootstrap in
addition to jQuery.
I was also excited by the
many enhancements in Windows 8.1 and the great
extensions to the WinRT platform, which is quickly
reaching maturity. Enhanced support for Bing and Live
SDKs, the new WebView and PdfViewer controls are just a
few examples. Finally, there are great new features in
Azure, and more integration between Windows Store apps
and the cloud.
We contributed to the buzz with
the release of WorkSpace, a new Windows Store app that
allows you to open and edit files that use many popular
formats (XLSX, HTML, RTF, PDF, and plain text). We built
WorkSpace using the controls in our Studio (Spread,
RichTextBox, and PdfViewer). Best of all, it's free and
you can download it right now!
With the release
of Windows 8.1 and all of the other enhancements,
ComponentOne will continue harnessing the best of the
best and passing it along to you in our controls. If you
didn't have a chance to attend BUILD or missed a
session, I recommend
watching them on demand. |

A few weeks ago we released the ComponentOne WorkSpace
app and it's been quite a success with over 3,000
downloads and garnering some great user feedback. It's a
first generation spreadsheet and rich text editor
all-in-one. Oh, and it also opens PDF files too just for
fun.
In this blog post series I will talk about
making the initial version of this app and focus on four
key areas that may help you build your own Windows Store
apps.

Extending HTML with AngularJS
Directives
|
|
Our CTO, Bernardo Castilho, has recently taken a
big interest in AngularJS. In fact, he has gone
and written his own directives. He has even gone
as far as to write a comprehensive whitepaper on
custom AngularJS directives. Bernardo does an
excellent job of covering directives and
provides very practical usage scenarios.
